Salman Khan, Best Use of Social Media?

Salman Khan
Salman Khan

For all his achievements, this is one bit of Salman Khan news I really didn't expect. So last night I had one eye on the Filmfare Twitter account to see who won awards at that ceremony, and another eye on my TV, where the Zee Cine Awards was being telecast. Amongst Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh's gags, fake shots of laughing celebrities inserted in at random moments, and the editors going wild at the thought of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone seated together, the thing that stood out was Zee Cine giving out an award for Best Use in Social Media. And that too to Salman Khan!
To me, it seemed like Zee's sole intention that night was to allow everyone to walk away happy, because not only did they have lots of random awards, they also gave out joint awards in quite a few categories (best debut, for example). Which probably explains the Best Use of Social Media award, because really, what does that have to do with cinema? What bugs me more is that they've decided the winner of this award based purely on online popularity, which I think has nothing really to do with actual use of social media. I like Sallu as much as the next person - but the guy tweets only occasionally, and his Facebook updates consist mostly of Being Human plugs, which may or may not be handled by a Public Relations team.

The analytics company that did this research (Asterii Analytics) explained to DNA how they went about picking Salman Khan as the winner for this award: "We used sophisticated web analysis tools to scan millions of pages on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Youtube, blogs and online forums to quantify the total volume of buzz and conversations on our cine stars. A specially designed four-phase methodology was used. A shortlist of 30 plus possible candidates was developed in the first phase of the selection process. We developed 25 parameters to rank the candidates on the total volume of buzz, the consistency of the conversations, the responsiveness and volume of buzz by the fans, the quality and sentiment of these conversations and know indicators of influence scores.Using this four-phase process we came to a single score and the top three candidates were Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. And the winner was Salman with a consistently high score on each of the mediums that was scanned.

Which is fair enough, but like I said, a celebrity's popularity on social media - particularly in Salman Khan's case - does not, in fact, have much to do with the best use of social media. Salman Khan undoubtedly has the biggest fan following offline, which is why it makes sense that the conversation continues online, but that's all due to his achievements as an actor - not because he's an awesome tweeter. Even when we consider the sheer number of followers he has (which is huge), it seems to me that the only thing he had to do in order to guarantee this number was to sign up on the respective sites - of course his fans are going to follow him anyway, regardless of the things he does on the platform. Which is why a Best Use of Social Media award seems pretty pointless to me, because why create yet another award to applaud someone for their popularity? Zee already has the Best Popular Actor award. Which, incidentally, Salman Khan won.

Plus, word has it that Manish Malhotra is even planning a special show around the concept of 100 years of Indian cinema, so I guess we can expect a lot of Bollywood fashion to be on display tonight. Sabyasachi, the New Red Carpet Ruler?

Vidya Balan (photo courtesy | Filmfare)
Vidya Balan
After four sightings of his collections on the red carpet in just one week, suffice it to say Sabyasachi Mukherjee has knocked off Manish Malhotra as the most preferred desi designer. And why not? Sabyasachi collections are timeless, stay true to the Indian heritage and retain his signature stamp of kitsch. It's no wonder then that Oprah Winfrey, talk show host extraordinaire made a beeline for his flagship store when she was in Mumbai.

His bridal couture line has got people from all corners of the world coveting it. His official Facebook page bears witness to that as radiant brides have sent in their pictures of their big day outfitted in Sabyasachi. Quite recently, he styled one of his biggest fans Vidya Balan for Filmfare. The results you could say, were phenomenal. The black and white snaps were quite honestly the best we've ever seen of the actress.
The NIFT graduate first started out back in 2001 and has showcased his work at the prestigious Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. It wasn't all about Indian wear but Indian symbolism sending down models wearing t-shirts with communist symbols, a nod to Marxist Kolkata where he grew up. He later tried his hand at costume design, working most notably on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's masterpieces Black and Guzaarish. His sister Payal is an influential force in his team, often playing muse. Nowadays, he appears on the popular show Band Baaja Bride.
A new store in Hyderabad, a suite at the Taj Suites in London and diversifying into accessories and kids wear; that's enough for a global takeover!
We take you through a quick recap of the stars who wore clothes from a Sabyasachi collection during the past week and why I feel he is the new undisputed red carpet ruler.

1) Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone

With a pulled back bun and statement earrings, Deepika Padukone looked extremely elegant in a black sari with a white embroidered border at the Police Show. The year may have just begun, but this look from Ms Padukone has already made me feel the best has already come.

2) Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan

Two Sabyasachi appearances in a week from Aishwarya Bachchan certainly says something. The actress is known to be partial to Abu Jani - Sandeep Khosla and Manish Malhotra. She wore this couture anarkali to the Filmfare Awards press conference.

Recycling her red Sabyasachi anarkali to the Police show, Ash left her hairstyle intact. Love the vivid red colour on her!

3) Sridevi

Sridevi

He designed her looks for her comeback film English Vinglish and in turn Sridevi walked the ramp for his couture show. The evergreen actress looked breathtaking in a white floral-print sari with a black border. Classy and elegant as always.

4) Huma Qureshi

Let's face it. Velvet is not an easy fabric to carry off but Huma Qureshi wears it so well. Love the sheer sleeves and applique details on her sari. We are expecting more sartorial hits from this gorgeous actress.

Rohan Sippy and Abhishek Bachchan. Time now for some good old Bollywood gossip from a big fat Bollywood event, just the way you like it! As you know, Riteish Deshmukh premiered his Marathi film Balak Palak last night at PVR Juhu and our spy was on the scene to give you all the celebrity gossip, so listen up! Abhishek Bachchan and Vivek Oberoi came face to face at the premiere but politely avoided saying hello! (I'm told it was super awkward.) In case your memory needs a little jogging, Vivek used to date Aishwarya Rai before she married junior Bachchan. Aha!

Riteish, Genelia, Honey and Dheeraj Deshmukh. The guest-list also included several TV stars since Riteish's bhabi Honey Deshmukh's friend, happens to be a television starlet! The cutest part however had to be Genelia Deshmukh (as she now clearly likes to be addressed) playing hostess with the mostest for hubby dearest. Escorting and looking after all his celebrity guests! *Awwww* They do seem very much the honeymooners everywhere they go by the way and I see she has refreshed those red highlights in her hair too!

Balak Palak
is about four teenage friends (Avya, Bhagya, Chiu and Dolly), who overhear that a friend from their colony, (Jyoti tai) has left their colony because she brought disgrace to her family.
Having received unsatisfactory explanations from their parents for Jyoti tai's exit it becomes their life's mission to find out what exactly her disgraceful act was! So the kids embark on a journey of discovery. Of course they end up bonding with their older school-mate (Vishu) who enlightens them via his knowledge of "blue films." He feels, one has to read, watch and if need be, perform to understand the true meaning life. BP is a fun filled drama that will hopefully help parents realize how important it is to communicate transparently with your children.

Oh dear. Are we ready for this? *lol* One cool thing they are doing though is a a first of it's kind "virtual premiere" today the entire cast will join the interactive virtual premiere on the big screen along with the cinema going public! UFO Moviez, the satellite delivered digital cinema network, will pioneer the 'Virtual Premier' at UFO digital theatres in five different locations – Mumbai, Thane, Nalasopara, Pune and Latur at the same time.

Riteish Deshmukh, along with co-producers Uttung Hitendra Thakur and Ravi Jadhav (who is also the director of the film) music directors Vishal-Shekhar, and the children of Balak Palak, will all be stationed at the Valuable Edutainment central studio, to watch and interact with the audiences in all UFO digital theatres at the same time! The session is expected to last for an hour, followed by the screening of the film. Pix: Yogen Shah for MissMalini
